The session was conceived in in San Francisco, and the first roundtables were initiated in in Washington, D. The original idea was to answer questions to those new to academe and give them guidance across a range of topics. Guidance for Faculty What we discovered was that many faculty, both rookies and veterans, wanted—or perhaps needed—a safe place to ask questions, share their frustrations, and take home some new ideas that would help them in their classrooms. Think speed dating, but for ideas: How do you balance teaching, research and service? How do you maintain some semblance of a life with the ever-increasing demands of the professoriate?

Lots and lots of listening — the students will need to listen very carefully to catch the important information. Before class — print off the worksheet and info sheets. Cut the info into individual sized pieces.
Students mill around asking and answering questions and swapping tickets. Could be used for starter, plenary or before a vocab test.

When does repetition of misinformation become fact? Several scenarios illustrating these ideas are included that can be used with students. But is it legitimate? Does research back up these claims? How to Ace a Speed Interview
The purpose of this assignment is to 1 expose students to current events in environmental science, 2 connect those stories to concepts covered in class, and 3 allow students to gain experience discussing important topics in environmental science. Students choose an article written in the last three months relevant to the field of environmental science.
They can use any reliable news source, but are highly encouraged to use The New York Times. Students write a brief summary of the article and describe the topics in the article that are relevant to topics that have been covered in class. Students work in pairs and have approximately three minutes to communicate the main points of the article to their partners.

My trip to New York was my one chance, as I did not have the time or money to return that summer. The hiring fair, held in a hotel convention hall, was intimidating and overwhelming. I arrived early only to find a line of prospective teachers wrapped around the block. There were over schools represented inside but based on the length of the lines behind each table, I calculated that I could visit only about 10 of them.
I would get five minutes at most to make a good impression and hopefully land a job offer or at least a longer follow-up interview. It was teacher-school speed dating.
Speed Learning: A Classroom Activity
Our first meeting was yesterday we officially meet on Tuesdays and Fridays between 1st and 2nd periods. Students came in and sat in groups of 3 and 4. Each group received a question printed on neon colored paper to contemplate and respond to quietly on a lined Post-It note.

That was yesterday’s challenge for some 20 quilt teachers at the Meet the Teacher event at the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, MA. I was pleased to have this opportunity to pitch my repertoire to an audience of quilt guild program planners.

My class were studying a topic on the organisation of sport in the UK and were struggling to get to grips with all of the various organisational bodies and their roles. I therefore decided to have an interim revision session with a difference and used speed dating as the vehicle for this. I created seven questions based on what they had already learnt. As each student came into the class, they were given one question each.
They were asked to sit at a table with others who had the same question. There are 24 in the group so roughly 3 students per question. After the 5 minutes were up, the speed dating began. Each student had to move around the room and meet with another student but not one who also had the same question as them. They then had 2 minutes in which to state their question and give the answer which was then reciprocated by their partner. In total they had 6 speed dates so each of the other questions was covered.
It’s much easier to engage students when you’re introducing new material. Every year I try to deliver revision lessons that really add value, but it can be difficult to find inspiring resources. I’d be interested to see your recommendations too. I’ve delivered this lesson a few times and it’s always gone really well. Each pair of students is given a picture and 20 questions.
They have to bring me a correct answer to move on to the next question.

Over researchers, clinicians and postgraduate students from 30 different schools, centres and institutes across UNSW recently came together to share their experience and challenges across the field of bioinformatics. The event aimed to showcase the research happening across the university, connect different skill sets, and enhance opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. With ample opportunity for professional matchmaking, researchers gave over 22 short, sharp presentations to their colleagues.
Presenters highlighted their research interests, areas of challenge and opportunities for collaboration. A relatively new field of study, bioinformatics combines elements of biology and computer science. It underpins and enables research across the life sciences. It has real-world applications in the development of personalised and preventative medicine, drug development, evolutionary studies, climate change, waste clean-up and a range of other research areas.
Bioinformatics lies in the middle of biology, molecular medicine, computer science, maths and statistics. It intrinsically requires experts to come together from faculties of engineering, biology and medicine. Because bioinformatics offers a wide range of research opportunity, the possibilities of interdisciplinary collaboration are endless.
The purpose of the event was to showcase what is happening in the field at UNSW, where researchers might need help, and to create broader opportunity for discovery and application.
