The line ended at Ashford until the extension to Folkestone opened on 28 June The station then passed on to the Southern Region of British Railways on nationalisation in This only lasted 15 years until 1 January when passenger services were diverted to the former South Eastern Railway station. Remarkably the complete station buildings and platforms survived for handling freight and engineering trains until it was closed and demolished around for construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. When sectorisation was introduced in the s by British Rail , the present station was served by Network SouthEast until the privatisation of British Rail. Ashford station before rebuilding by British Rail Ashford station has been rebuilt on two occasions in recent history. Now meet the factory vegetable. Grown in their millions in trays of nutrient-enriched water inside a heated, artificially-lit greenhouse large enough to house ten football pitches, they are as far as you can get from ‘natural’ home-grown food. But this week, workers are putting the finishing touches to Britain’s largest hydroponic greenhouse – an astonishing construction in white steel and glass.
By the time the site is complete in , another six massive greenhouses will have been constructed, providing a home to more than 1.

Fresh from running this workshop at the World Congress of Physical Therapy in Geneva the week before, this will be the first time the Reps workshop has come to the UK. Intensity is a hot topic in rehabilitation – join us to learn more about how we can translate research into practice.
The aim of this workshop is to recommend strategies that can increase the dosage and intensity of practice in inpatient, outpatient and community rehabilitation settings. The workshop is relevant to diagnoses such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, amputation and hip fracture and will be of interest to physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, allied health assistants and nursing professionals. Evidence is reviewed for the effectiveness of extra practice, and strategies that have been shown to increase practice including one-to-one, semi-supervised and independent practice.
The workshop is divided into three content areas: One-to-one practice under the direct supervision of a therapist Semi-supervised practice that takes place in the therapy area but is not under the direct supervision of a therapist Independent unsupervised practice that takes place outside of the therapy area ie on the hospital ward or at home , and is not supervised by a therapist For more information and learning outcomes, take a look at the StrokeEd website:

Food and Drink Thanet Earth: Giles Price By Martin Fletcher 7: Today his view is very different. The four great ethereal edifices form the biggest and most technologically advanced glasshouse complex in Britain, and they produce tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers on a scale that Montgomery could never have dreamt of during most of his 64 years. The complex is called Thanet Earth, and it arouses strong feelings. It is exactly the sort of enterprise that is fuelling the grow-your-own movement, according to Liz Wright, the author of several books on smallholdings and self-sufficiency, who feels that most people dislike the increasing concentration of food production in a few hands, and really do have the view that vegetables should be coming out of gardens with mud on them.
Those who work at Thanet Earth strenuously object to such characterisations. They contend that they are simply harnessing technology to help nature to produce some of the best salad ingredients ever grown in Britain, albeit on an industrial scale. For better or worse, however, the intensive production techniques practised by Thanet Earth appear to represent the future. Proponents argue that the ability to grow huge amounts of produce in confined, controlled spaces provides at least a partial answer to the great challenge the world will soon be facing: In the reception area I have to fill out a health questionnaire to check that I am not importing any nasty bugs and viruses.
Before entering the glasshouses themselves I am required to put on white protective overalls and plastic shoe coverings for the same reason. Then I am escorted into TG1, the newest of the four glasshouses, which opened in May.

Is this another high-speed train crash? I ts operator, Southeastern Trains, called it “one of the most significant milestones in the history of Britain’s railways. Even where they are faster, they cost about 20 per cent more – and take Kent commuters to places that most do not want to go. In the pre-HS1 dark ages, the journey time on the traditional line from Victoria to Faversham was 66 minutes, with six stops.
This was actually two minutes faster than the “high-speed” service now. So to make the high-speed trains look better, Southeastern has slowed down all the others, and cut their frequency. The journey from Victoria to Faversham now takes 77 minutes, with ten stops, two of them at wayside halts surrounded by open fields.

Early history[ edit ] Faversham was established as a settlement before the Roman conquest. The town was less than 10 miles from Canterbury, and consequently Faversham had become established on this road network by 50 AD following the initial conquest by Claudius in 43 AD. The cockpit-style outdoor auditorium, the first of its kind found in Britain, was a style the Romans used elsewhere in their empire on the Continent.
The manor was recorded as Terra Regis, meaning it was part of the ancient royal estates. King Stephen gave it to his chief lieutenant, William of Ypres , but soon made him swap it with Lillechurch now Higham so that the manor of Faversham could form part of the endowment of Faversham Abbey. It still houses timber framed buildings and has been described as “the finest medieval street in southeast England”. Most of the abbey was demolished, and the remains of Stephen were rumoured to have been thrown into Faversham Creek.

The Isle of Thanet is fast becoming the Kentish Riviera — with property prices at less than half the cost of its celebrity strewn south-west rival. Increasingly, Londoners are exchanging their fractious suburban commutes for a minute journey covering 80 miles on a high-speed train for three days a week instead of five.

What if I told you, though, that there was an even better way? Those men that you revere were quite likely readers themselves. There were books that they devoured and studied over and over that influenced who they were and how they came to see the world.

I sat down to watch “Speed-Dating” without having heard anything about it previously. So I watched it with a clean slate and no expectations. However, I was bored senseless throughout the movie and there weren’t really that many laughs. The story is fairly straight forward though, as you have a group of young people setting up ‘speed-dating‘ events at their club, in order to meet and hook up with women. Sure, sounds plausible enough, but it came off as a weak result.
What was one of the more funny things in “Speed-Dating” was the tranny at the event and also the guy who rarely got to sit down and talk with the ladies. Most of the other characters in the movie were lacking personality and failed to shine on the screen.
